Exodus 19:3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a "Kingdom of Priests" and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
God's plan was for all of His people to Hear His Voice, Obey His Commandments, and Become a Kingdom of Priests, taking His gospel to the Nations of the world.
HOWEVER, THEY MADE A MISTAKE THAT MANY HAVE BEEN MAKING EVER SINCE.
Exodus 20:18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed from His presence and stood afar off.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

I think that the biggest mistake that the priests made was that they couldn't see Jesus when he was right in front of their faces doing miracles. They were so consumed with how the man of God or the Son of God should have looked like and acted like that they couldn't see the simple plain man that stood before them. In past pentecosts I had no faith that anything could happen because I was not in the right relationship with God.

Many hear his voice secondhand. I know I have heard it second hand. Some hear it first hand.

Not to be afraid of God, not to pull away from God, not to try to make him in the flesh.

Hear God’s voice and obey Him. If you want to be a kingdom of priests that can actually lead someone to Him, this is how it happens. The deck is slightly stacked... we're made by Him to hear His voice, the obeying is up to us.

The people were afraid of God and turned away from him. They wanted someone else to hear from God for them. But then many didn’t end up trusting that one they wanted to hear for them anyway. They did not let the word become life in their life.
